Contaminants Survey Crop 2007
Final Results of Survey
DURST MALZ conducts a survey for contaminants in barley and malt on a regular basis. Following tables summarise the results available till January 1st, 2007. Upon request copies of the original certificates issued by the contracted laboratories can be submitted. The DON analysis results of DURST Analysis was carried out by SGS NATEC, Hamburg for 16 barley and 1 malt sample. The scheme is based on the German standard method DFGS19 including the PCBs, too. The substances covered by this method and the detection limits are available upon request. The following table shows positive results only. Substances not mentioned in here, imply that the findings are below detection limit.
All findings are far below the legal limits. In all three cases the substances are insecticides used in stores.
1 Pesticides and PCB
Analysis was carried out by SGS NATEC, Hamburg for 16 barley and 1 malt sample. The scheme is based on the German standard method DFGS19 including the PCBs, too. The substances covered by this method and the detection limits are available upon request. The following table shows positive results only. All findings are far below the legal limits. In all three cases the substances are insecticides used in stores.
2 Heavy Metals
The 17 samples analysed were identical with the ones included in the pesticide survey.
Lab: SGS NATEC. Hamburg.
Cadmium could be detected more or less in all samples. In any case the values are far below the legal limit. Lead could not be detected.
3 Mycotoxins
The samples analysed for the whole spectrum of relevant mycotoxins were identical with those included in the pesticide survey.
Laboratory: SGS NATEC, Hamburg.
Mycotoxins included (abbreviation in brackets):
Aflatoxins (AT)B1,B2,G1,G2
Ochratoxin A (OTA)
Deoxynivalenol (DON)
Nivalenol (NIV)
Fusarenon-X (FUS)
3-Acetyl DON (Ac-DON)
Diacetoxyscirpenol (DIASC)
HT-2 Toxin (HT2)
T-2 Toxin (T2)
Zearalenon (ZEA)
In addition 51 samples were analysed by DURST MALZ lab for DON.
AT and OTA cannot be expected in germinating barley at high levels. This is confirmed by the results of this survey. DON, being an indicator for field fungi, is origin and crop year specific. In this crop year no remarkable contamination in sound barley could be detected. The results are in line with weather observations during vegetation period, predicting no harm for DON formation in case of harvest before long rainy period.
4 Radioactivity and Dioxins
In one malt sample analysed by SGS NATEC. No contamination could be detected.
